Building the legend

Saparale first saw the light of day in 1845, driven by the ambitions of a visionary man – Philippe de Rocca Serra. This experienced businessman and lawyer, with a dream of creating a modern and autonomous agricultural estate, set off to Africa to bring his project to life. After almost 20 years, he crossed the continent – often on the back of an elephant – advising royal families and the wealthy, all the while continue to pursue his goal. Upon his return, with the experience gained throughout this adventure and a considerable fortune, he transformed his dream into a reality. In less than three years, Saparale took shape: a private hamlet cultivating olive oil and, above all, wines from endemic grape varieties on a 100-hectare vineyard. 25 craftsmen's families came to live on site, helping to bring the site to life. Philippe de Rocca Serra, a trailblazer often mocked for his innovative ideas, was quickly rewarded for his work. In 1900, he took home gold at the Paris Exposition. Upon his death, however, the estate suffered a series of blows as phylloxera, World War I and socio-economic crises put an end to the estate's glory days.

Replanting hope

In the 80s, a new dream arrived to breathe life back into Le Hameau de Saparale – that of Philippe Farinelli. Since he was a child, he adventured through the ruins of the estate, hoping to one day see this historic site reborn. Little by little, this dream became an obsession and a real passion that drove him to undergo training and become a winegrower, then an oenologist. His approach, marked by an uncompromising quest for quality, a strong identity and wines of a rare finesse, quickly made his winery a real unmissable on the island, with his vintages regularly selling out. With the unfailing support of his wife Julie, Philippe saw his business prosper. On the back of this success, the couple continued and persevered in their projects to restore the estate, their dream from the outset. Since 2007, Le Hameau de Saparale has been gradually transformed into a charming boutique hotel: the manor house, the sheepfolds, the restaurant, the wine cellars, as well as the olive grove and the vines, have all been painstakingly restored, returning the estate to all its former glory.

A heritage to be revitalised

Thanks to its 'little village' configuration, this boutique hotel unfolds like a living fresco, masterfully blending nature and restored nature. The olive grove and orange orchard release their perfumes, while the granite buildings – patinated by time – rediscover all their majesty, while the former police station, a silent reminder of a bygone era, appears at peace today. All around, you'll find signs of activity and renewal: oak barrels lined up in a row, sparkling vats reflecting the light and the impressive procession of prickly-pear trees that boldly climb the surrounding hillsides. The walls, some marked by the passage of time, recall the history of each stone in a renaissance built day after day.

The fruit of hard work

The Saparale vineyard extends over 52 hectares, giving birth to around 300,000 bottles of red, rosé and white wines per year. Here, the land is precious: the soil, made up of granite sands, offers the vines the perfect anchoring thanks to its aerated, porous and filtering structure, combined with the valley's favourable micro-climate. Loyal to its values, the winery has been awarded the HVE label (for winemakers having reached the highest environmental-certification level). The soil is responsibly nourished: no chemical fertiliser, but several annual efforts to preserve the natural balance and strengthen the vines' resistance. Here, endemic grape varieties – real treasures of our Corsican heritage – reign supreme: Sciaccarellu, Minustellu, Carcaghjolu Neru, Nielucciu, Vermentinu and a dozen others. Together, they tell the tale of an authentic terroir and a know-how conveyed with passion for generations.
